The Rotacurrent handles non-sticky products without back-mixing, while the Venturijet reduces the size of the cyclone and complementary dust collection equipment. Heyl & Patterson offers both types, but this article will focus on the Rotacurrent.Residence time in the Rotacurrent Flash Dryer varies for each particle according to its physical properties, as each particle has a residence time proportionate to its weight. This results in no overdrying, no overheating and no unnecessary processing risks or product degradation.In the Rotacurrent Flash Dryer, manufactured by Heyl & Patterson's Renneburg Division, each particle takes its own spiral path to the top of the drying column. The total length of the path constitutes the total residence time for the particle. Because of the spiral trajectory, residence time is independent of the dryer's actual column height. Fine particles have short residence times, while heavier ones have longer times. Extra-heavy, undesirable elements are separated and eliminated via the inspection-discharge trap at the base of the column of the dryer.Wet feed enters the Rotacurrent dryer through an airlock at the base of the drying column. It is injected into the main hot air stream by a conventional heat source. The wet feed then follows a spiral path up through the interior of the drying column.The discharge gate at the bottom of the column is counter-weighted so extra-heavy particles such as lumps, stones and stray metal are automatically discharged. This secondary air stream produces a mechanical effect to reinforce the initial spiral air flow, and a thermal effect to compensate for the loss of drying potential as the main air flow picks up moisture and cools during the evaporation processThe processed product exits at the top of the column through the outlet scroll and into an extra high-efficiency cyclone. This cyclone accomplishes very effective separation, saving money and energy. The product leaves the cyclone through an airlock and a duct directed to storage or immediate use. Dryer exhaust is discharged by a fan and can be partially recycled for heat recovery.Turbulent heat transfer and thorough particle dispersion combine inside the Rotacurrent Flash Dryer for maximum thermal efficiency. The design of the column minimizes the loss of external heat radiation. Due to excellent heat transfer performance, column height and other dimensions are smaller than comparably sized, conventional dryers. As a result, building costs and insulation requirements are also lower.Because airflow moves the product rather than mechanical means, the Rotacurrent has minimal moving parts. Rotacurrent dryer routine maintenance activities are also enhanced by the operator's continuous visual inspection of the flow and by direct access to column interiors.To improve processing efficiency, a portion of previously dried product can be re-introduced into the primary stream of pasty of sticky product.
